Is there an express bus in Staten Island? ›

The SIM1, SIM1C, SIM7, SIM10, and SIM11 bus routes constitute a public transit line in Staten Island and Manhattan, New York. The routes all operate on Richmond Avenue and Hylan Boulevard on Staten Island, but go to three separate terminals in Manhattan.

Local-bus routes are designated by a letter followed by a number. Routes with an "M" prefix operate mainly in Manhattan. "B" is for Brooklyn, "Bx" for the Bronx, "Q" for Queens and "S" for Staten Island. Routes with an "X" prefix are express routes.

Maps and schedules can also be found on the MTA's website. Generally, buses run every 10-15 minutes during weekdays, with reduced service nights, weekends and holidays (approx. 20-30 minutes). When a bus arrives, check the bus route displayed over its front windshield because several routes may share a stop.

All express buses are diesel-powered, 45 ft (14 m) long commuter coaches. All buses are high-floored.

Express buses cost $7. Tap to pay your fare with your contactless credit/debit card, smartphone, or OMNY card, or pay with a MetroCard.

Standard 7- and 30-day unlimited cards are accepted on MTA New York City Subway; non-express buses from either the MTA, NICE, or Bee-Line; the Roosevelt Island Tramway; and the Staten Island Railway.

Reduced-fare MetroCards and One Metro New York (OMNY) are available for riders who are 65 or older or riders who have qualifying disabilities. The reduced fare is half the base fare. (For example, the base fare for subways and local buses is $2.90, so the reduced fare is $1.45.)

Express buses generally travel between Manhattan and one of the other four boroughs, although there are a few exceptions, I believe. Local buses make stops about every 2–4 blocks along a route. Some routes have limited stop buses, also, making stops at major cross streets.

Videos on social media show buses are often empty, and data indicates they are indeed safer, with more than double the amount of crimes on the subway than on the bus for every million rides.

About bus fares

OMNY is accepted on all New York City buses. Fares can also be paid with a MetroCard, coins, or SingleRide ticket. Some buses are fare-free: Q70-LaGuardia Link to and from LaGuardia Airport.

Longest rides: The longest local bus route is Staten Island's S78 at 19.7 miles between the St George Ferry Terminal and the Bricktown Mall in Charleston. Depots: Buses are housed, washed, and maintained at 28 depots.

How OMNY works. To pay your fare at subway turnstiles, AutoGates, and onboard buses (including Select Bus Service buses), simply tap your own contactless credit or debit card, smart device, or OMNY card on the OMNY reader.

If a bus has a sign that says "Limited", it stops at every stop on the "Limited Route". If its not a Limited, it stops every two blocks or so ( at least in Manhattan). If it has an X, its an Express Bus;they are extra fares and usually make very few stops and not likely anyplace a tourist would go..
